Excitement is building for our first annual Cajun and Creole Summer Camp for
Kids, June 16-20 and June 23-27, so if you haven't yet decided to have your
child join us, now's the time to reserve a spot in this truly unique summer
camp for kids 6-12 years old.
Each week will be an independent session of intensive music instruction on
guitar, Cajun accordion or fiddle; French singing, dance classes and other
cultural workshops; a camper performance for family members; and a fun field
trip to St. Martinville. The camp will be held from 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m.,
Monday-Friday, at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, 101 W. Vermilion in
downtown Lafayette.
You can sign your child/children up for one or both sessions. Each session
is just $175, with a 10% discount available for Family Members of Friends of
Louisiana Folk Roots, and for siblings in the same session. Camp
participants will need to bring their own instruments and a lunch each day.
Here's the exciting roster of renowned local professional musicians and
educators who will be the camp instructors:
CHRISTINE BALFA, daughter of the legendary Cajun fiddler Dewey Balfa,
founding director of Louisiana Folk Roots, and member of the bands Balfa
Toujours and Bonsoir, Catin, will teach French singing and Cajun history.
COURTNEY GRANGER, member of the band Balfa Toujours who also performs with
Ray Abshire and released his first solo album at age 16, will teach guitar
and dancing.
CHRIS SEGURA, member of the the bands Feufollet and The Lafayette Rhythm
Devils who started playing professionally at age 11, will teach fiddle.
COREY LEDET, twentysomething leader of Corey Ledet and His Zydeco Band, will
teach accordion.
KRISTI GUILLORY (Session 1 only), member of the bands Bonsoir, Catin and The
Lafayette Rhythm Devils who formed her first band at age 12, will teach
accordion.
DAVE TRAINER (Session 2 only), member of the band T-Salé and beloved music
teacher for Cité des Arts and the Acadiana Arts Council, will teach fiddle.
JANE VIDRINE, member of the band Magnolia Sisters, noted folklorist, and a
music teacher for Lafayette Parish School System, will teach guitar and
French singing.
YVONNE OLIVIER, who has toured internationally with La Compagnie
Louisiannaise and taught dance in the New Orleans public schools, will teach
dancing.
HENRY HAMPLE, who performs with Sheryl Cormier and teaches music at the
Academy of the Sacred Heart, is the Camp Director and will teach fiddle and
accordion.
