Mary Martha Pierre's bio

Mary Martha Pierre lives in St. Martinville, Louisiana. She speaks
fluent Creole French and English and uses both languages as a tour guide
for the historic city of St. Martinville.  She learned her craftwork
from her grandmother, aunts, and mother. Her specialty is open-hearth
cooking, which is rarely done today.  She uses traditional cast iron
pots that have been in her family for more than 150 years.  In addition
to bean mosaics, she makes wax flowers, wreaths, quilts, rosaries, and
corn shuck bookmarkers.  Mrs. Pierre has presented her cultural crafts
at numerous festivals including the Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco
Festival in Plaisance; Festival International in Lafayette; and the New
Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
